Instructions: Write a 3-page synthesis paper/article review using the 5 combined evidence evaluation tables. References/resources are provided to assist you in formulating your thoughts and ideas. This must be a synthesis of all 5 of the combined evidence evaluation tables and NOT JUST A SUMMARY of each article independently.

Synthesis Paper Rubric and Instructions

Background/Significance-
Describe the background and significance of the clinical problem.
Include data and relevant citations from the literature to support the significance of the clinical problem (e.g., incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, cost, etc.).

PICOT question-
Clearly and logically report the need to ask your clinical question.

Literature Review-
Synthesize (do not summarize) the following elements
study designs
subjects
settings
measures
instruments
results including statistical findings
Appraisal results including methodology flaws or concerns

Application to Practice-
This section should be completed based on your current or future practice site (Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in critical care/ICU), which you will need to describe briefly.

GRADE Criteria-
Using the GRADE criteria (Resources defining GRADE criteria provided), include an overall assessment of the quality of evidence (Very low; Low, Moderate: High) included in your evidence evaluation table. Include a brief discussion of how you used the components of GRADE (Methodological Flaws, Imprecision, Inconsistency, Indirectness, Publication Bias) to upgrade or downgrade your rating.

Practice Change-
Determine whether sufficient evidence exists in the articles for you and your committee to make a practice change recommendation. Include relevant citations to support your determination.

State specifically if you recommend a practice change or not-
If sufficient evidence exists, then state the practice as a recommendation statement (including if it is weak or strong recommendation). Discuss how the strengths and limitations of the evidence affected your determination and applicability to clinical practice.
If sufficient evidence does not exist, discuss how the strengths and limitations of the evidence affected your determination and applicability to clinical practice. Also, discuss the next steps to address the problem.
