Affirmative action is meant to uplift and gives equal opportunities to a section of society and in this case workforce, who are discriminated against based race or color or national origin. Though the program has benefited a lot of people it has also created stereotypes in the society which makes actually has become more detrimental than beneficial. People who benefit from affirmative action are more often than not are despised, disliked and stereotyped by people who are kept out of the loop since they are privileged enough to get equal opportunity. People who are hired or get employment benefit through affirmative action are generally thought to be less efficient or capable or stereotyped on their origin as compared to people who have achieved success without the help of affirmative action. However this is not necessary, there is no rule or research to prove that says people who are hired under affirmative action are in any way inferior to the people who are not part of the affirmative action program. However, the irony is that they are branded like that and their value added to the organization gets drowned in that noise no matter how valuable they are to the organization.
Off late, the affirmative action which was supposed to end racial and regional discrimination has emerged as a tool for the discrimination. It starts at school and university level and actually carries to the employment scenario. No matter how intelligent and valuable the person is but he or she may be racially profiled and based on the stereotypes of that particular race or community, they would be discriminated against. There is a concept that has developed called reverse discrimination. People who have received benefit have been questioned on their merit and skills even for a minor fault. Just because they have come through the program, they are considered less skilled due to small mistakes which in practical life could be committed by anyone irrespective of their racial profile or skin color.Hence I do agree with the statement that people hired under affirmative action program are less valued and their mistakes are amplified due to stereotypes that have been created in the society.
