Students will be writing an in-depth, 3-4 page discussion and reflection paper after viewing the documentaries, Poisoned Water and Before the Flood. A reflection paper is not a summary of the course readings or a stream of conscious mind dump on paper. As the diagram below suggests, a reflection paper is your identification of the main themes of the readings integrated with your classroom experience and how both affect your thinking and practice. A reflection paper is your chance to add your thoughts and analysis to what you have read and experienced. A reflection paper is meant to illustrate your understanding of the material and how it affects your ideas and possible practice in future. Consider if and how what you have read and learned changes your thinking and might affect your practice in both personal and professional situations. Review the readings and class notes to be sure you’ve included all the relevant information you can and made all the connections you can.
Students will be required to incorporate information from the documentary, lectures, readings, discussions, and personal research to successfully compile a comprehensive paper. All papers must adhere to the format noted below. Students must be in attendance the day of the viewing to be eligible for full credit on the assignment. Papers will be submitted via Canvas by the designated time. No late papers will be accepted.
The first section of the outline is the introduction, which identifies the subject and gives an overview of your reaction to it. The introduction paragraph ends with your thesis statement, which identifies whether your expectations were met and what you learned. The thesis statement serves as the focal point of your paper. It also provides a transition to the body of the paper and will be revisited in your conclusion.
The body of your paper identifies the three major points that support your thesis statement. Each paragraph in the body should start with a topic sentence. The rest of each paragraph supports your topic sentence. Keep in mind that a transition sentence at the end of each paragraph creates a paper that flows logically and is easy to read. When creating the outline, identify the topic sentence for each paragraph, and add the supporting statements, evidence, and your own experiences or reactions to the subject underneath.
The conclusion wraps up your essay, serving as the other bookend in stating and proving your thesis statement. In outlining the conclusion, identify the thesis statement and add the main points from the body paragraphs as a recap. Don’t add new information to the conclusion. Be sure to identify the closing statement of your reflection paper.
Reflection papers will be 12 pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and 3-4 pages in length.
A sample outline format should reflect the main points of your paper, from start to finish:
