Your paper is to be based on E. Larson’s
Dead Wake.
It must be 4-5 pages in length and is due no later than 11:30 p.m. on 2-17. To submit the paper, click into the

Your work will be assessed based on the following considerations: content, accuracy of content, grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity and organization, specific evidence provided to support your interpretation/assessment of the work, and ability to focus on and answer the questions under consideration. The essay should be in your words, not Larson’s. If you must use a quotation, be sure that it is short. For this paper it is not necessary to footnote quotations; simply include in parentheses at the end of a quote the page number where the quote may be found. (This, of course, assumes that you are quoting from Larson’s book. If you are quoting from any other source, please include a full citation.)
Before you begin the paper, please read over my handouts “Tips for Writing an ‘A’ Paper” and “Grading Rubric for Papers,” both of which may be found under the “Assignments” tab on our course website.
Also, there are
numerous
resources to be found on the college library’s website under the “Streaming Media” tab and through the Virtual Learning Commons, under “Writing.” These sources can help you learn how to outline a paper, develop a thesis, cite your sources, etc. Furthermore, the college’s Writing Center is available for all students. Tutors are available remotely to assist students at any stage of the writing process, but they will be most helpful if you have at least a rough draft with which to work.
Please answer the following questions: In your opinion, by attacking civilian ships, were Captain Schweiger and his crew committing acts of terrorism? Or did the fact that Germany and Britain were at war, and that notices had been provided the public about the dangers of Atlantic sea crossings, make the German policy of submarine warfare acceptable? Knowing that German U-boats were in the area, why did the British military fail to share the specific information regarding the subs with Captain Turner as the Lusitania approached Ireland? And why wasn’t the Lusitania provided a military escort? Why did the British authorities attempt to blame Captain Turner for the sinking of the ship? Discuss several of the passengers on board: why were they going to England, did they fear a German attack, and did they survive the sinking of the ship? Finally, did you find
Dead Wake
to be compelling; why or why not?
I do not ordinarily accept late papers. Please make sure that you begin the work for your paper well before the due date so that a last-minute problem does not make it difficult for you to submit your paper on time.
