1) Discuss at least three significant ways that African American jazz and blues musicians took on activist roles and/or made social commentary through their music during the first half of the twentieth century. To what extent were such activities related to their experiences as workers in the music industry? To what extent were they influenced by broader social phenomena shaping Black life and contemporaneous social, political, and cultural movements? Your answer must include at least one example from the 1910s/1920s and at least one example from the swing/bebop era (1930s/40s).

2) Describe at least three significant examples of how whites or other non-African Americans in the US and/or elsewhere used jazz as a vehicle for their social, cultural, and artistic rebellions during the first half of the twentieth century. How did jazz’s connections to African American society and the dynamics of race relations influence this story? What were the possibilities and limitations of such rebellions? At least one of your examples must be from the 1920s and at least one must be from the swing/bebop era (1930s/40s).

3) Discuss how the bebop and “all girl” swing band movements extended and/or built upon a democratic swing era culture and how they responded to the limits of that culture. Your answer should offer some discussion of the broader social and political contexts in which the swing movement developed in the 1930s and was transformed in the 1940s.

Additional guidelines:

Your answer should be double-spaced, in 12-point font, with page numbers on each page. References must be cited using a recognizable format (e.g., MLA or Chicago). See syllabus for link to information about citations and plagiarism.

A bibliography is not required, unless you choose to consult sources from outside the course.
