Writing Assignment #1
Instructions: Help Mike understand his experiences at work by using either Marx or Weber in your paper to analyze Mike’s fast food restaurant experience at Adams. Choose one of the two sociologists listed here (Karl Marx or Max Weber) and use their arguments to analyze the passage below. That is, if you choose Marx let the reader (Professor Crawford) know who within this story are the proletariat, the bourgeoisie, etc. Likewise, if you choose Weber point out/discuss an example of meritocracy, hierarchy of authority, etc. within the passage.
In terms of how to structure your answer, it may be useful to define the concept/theory first and then point out the example from the passage. For instance, if you chose ‘meritocracy’ you might begin by saying: meritocracy is defined as the ____________. Within the passage, an example of meritocracy is when Mike ____________. Feel free to use a direct quote from the passage especially when referring to Mike’s experience as it will likely help to support your argument.
Be sure to include all 5 different concepts/theories from one of the two lists below. Your paper should be 1- 2 pages, double-spaced, and 12 pt font.
Analyze the following passage using the concepts below:
Mike has worked at a fast food restaurant called Adams for the last 2 years. Over this time, he has become more and more disheartened about his job. For instance, when Mike has a complaint he cannot tell the company CEO directly face-to-face. Mike must tell his boss, who will then tell their boss, and then their boss, until it reaches the CEO. Mike is also growing tired of only doing the cold cut and meat patty separation. But he is not allowed to switch stations because it will slow down the quick pace in which customers receive their orders. Lastly, Mike works very hard because he was told by the company if he continues to work hard, he will be rewarded with advancement in the company. During informal discussions with his several bosses Mike is told that his co-workers do not work hard and therefore they have not received a raise in years. Since that discussion Mike has distanced himself from his co-workers and continued to work hard. However, recently Mike has been taking his lunch break with his co-workers and he is realizing that they have a lot more in common than Mike previously thought. Help Mike understand his experiences at work by using either Marx or Weber in your short answer essay to analyze Mike’s fast food restaurant experience at Adams.
Marx: Proletariat, Bourgeoisie, Alienation (use 1 of the 4 discussed), False consciousness,
Weber: Clear division of labor, Meritocracy, Hierarchy of authority, Impersonality, Rationalization
