This task will require you to have access to a common, mundane object and a ruler that shows centimeters.

Find either 1) Can Opener, or 2) Toothbrush, or 3) Scissors, or 4) Lamp

1. Write a initial post between 100-150 words describing the object you have and writing the description to someone who has never seen such a thing.

2. Read Tom and David post, read through their initial posts and begin assigning descriptive details for each post to the objects. Separate subjective descriptions such as “pretty” and “ugly” from objective descriptions that give details about the object (hint: use sub-headers for the subjective and objective separations).

Tom

A toothbrush is a hygienic tool used to clean teeth of surface-level bits like food particles or plaque buildup. In conjunction with toothpaste, a tooth cleansing paste that is spread atop the toothbrush, it keeps your teeth strong and healthy by preventing tooth decay, gingivitis, and more. A toothbrush is generally a 6.5″ long stick-like shape and has bristles at the top coming out at a right angle. The bristles on a toothbrush are thin like hair but are rigid enough to gently brush your teeth, and are usually no longer than half an inch in strand length. The bristles scrape the food and plaque off your teeth and gums. It is recommended to brush your teeth after every meal and replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months.

Scissors (Bandage)

A pair of bandage scissors are an instrument used in a healthcare setting for one to cut through bandages, gauze, tape and other medical products. From end to end, they’re approximately 8″ in length. There are two metal sides that are held together in the middle by a screw to keep them attached to each other. One side of the scissor handles you will place your thumb and the other side you will place the rest of your fingers, in order to open them. Once your hands are placed inside of openings, you will open the width that your hand allows to open the blades to prepare for placement of cutting through the product that needs cutting. On the inside of the blades, there are small jagged metal teeth-like structures that allow you to grasp the material you will be cutting through. Once you place scissors on material that you’re cutting through, you will then bring your hand together inside of openings to allow for the blades to come together to cut said material.

3. In a final post, assemble the objective descriptions you found and then classify objective details. For example, for a staple remover: prongs, plastic finger grips, spring mechanism. And then arrange the various classes of detail in the most logical sequence for description. For example, for a staple remover: from finger grips to plastic exterior to hollow metal prongs, including pointed tips and arms, to the coil-spring extensor mechanism. In the final paragraph of this post answer the question, “What is the intended audience of this product description?” “Will the intended audience understand the function of the product because of the description?”
