Standardized testing is a method of evaluation trusted and administered by countries all over the world. Standardized exams usually contain sets of similar questions used to measure an individual’s performance and compare schools in the area. These large-scale tests collect data from those taking these exams to form a comparison of outcomes among all test takers. Standardized testing has caused many controversies in the educational sector; on account of the huge effect they have on college admissions. Standardized testing forms an unbiased grading scheme but sacrifices good educational systems.

Standardized testing is a method used to measure and compare students’ achievements with all ethicality and integrity. According to Phelps (2008), standardized tests can provide useful evaluations with equality and fairness. He believed that standardized exams are fair to students since they are conducted under the same circumstances. In addition, the writer mentioned a research that was conducted in 1936 which asserted that teachers’ grading is considered to be insubstantial and an untrustworthy form of measurement. Teachers can allow their perception of individual students to interfere with their grading system, which can ultimately lead to unethical grading. Furthermore, Churchill (2015) mentioned that standardized tests are made to assess students on indistinguishable sets of questions that are conducted in the same environment for everyone. The tests are graded by either a grading machine or blind reviewers. As a result, ethicality and integrity are maintained throughout the grading process. To analyze, standardized testing is considered the most accurate and fair form of testing students’ achievements and ability since it does not hamper with external factors that may cause unfair judgment.

On the other hand, others argue that standardized testing is nothing but a limit to education without proven advancement. According to Squire (2014), standardized testing obligates teachers to take on the responsibility of preparing students for these tests along with their usual teaching tasks. Some schools even switch out classes including art, music, and foreign language in order to focus primarily on subjects included in standardized exams. Consequently, forming a new test-based syllabus which over time may narrow the student’s skills and limit their knowledge. Squire (2014) also stated that these exams focus primarily on cognitive skills. Therefore, possibly disregarding many other skills students may want to pursue. In addition, Greene and Hess (2019) acknowledged that since standardized testing there have been no visible changes in the industry, even though these tests have promised a better economic future. Research done prior to this shows no evidence linking test scores to a student’s success. Raising concern that standardized tests aren’t actually related to higher education. Thus, test-based schooling has only robbed students of the education they deserve. Making standardized testing ineffective and harmful to the educational system.

Although standardized testing is an unbiased way to evaluate students, it’s harming their education. Standardized tests are used to measure a student’s achievements and progress. It’s an ethical way to evaluate all students fairly. These tests ensure that school systems are reliable and aren’t influenced by a student’s character. However, standardized tests give teachers the responsibility of preparing students for these exams. Furthermore, subjects not included in standardized tests are being sacrificed in order to focus primarily on subjects included; consequently, limiting students’ education without a sign of economic growth. Thus, the analyzed articles leave the researcher with the question of “How do standardized tests limit the educational process and students’ skills and abilities in Saudi Arabia?”
