Prevalence Rates – How many people are affected by this issue? Provide empirical estimates of its prevalence. Are any subgroups impacted by this issue more than others? Explain how these populations are disproportionately impacted including a detailed explanation of the disproportionality.

Historic and Social Context – Briefly explain the history of your topic. Then, explain how the topic has come to be defined/operationalized at micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

Local Impact/Response – What is the local impact of your topic? Who in the local community is addressing this topic? Are there other programs or agencies in your community serving this population? If so, who are they? What would you do differently than they are doing? Should your effort be a partnership? If so, explain why you should partner with them and how you would go about it. Which other programs are clients most likely to interact with related to their challenges?

Theory – Identify and explain one HBSE theory that undergirds your intervention or informs work on this topic/with this population. Choose just one theory so that you can cover it in depth. Finally, be sure to apply and explain a social justice lens/framework (especially if your selected HBSE theory lacks one).

Social Problem

The selected social problem that social workers might face when working with this population is mental health in adolescent. The adolescent who has this mental illness can also have other issues that follow that such as misuse of drugs and alcohol, anxiety, and ADHD.

Prevalence Rates

1 in 5 youth, ages 9-17, are currently diagnosed with a mental illness. 3% of adolescent have bipolar disorder and 2.6% have bipolar disorder that causes severe impairment.

Historical and Social Context

The first identification where people were shifting from depression to manic excitement was documented in 1851. Ever since then, researchers have been focused on understanding the mental issues and challenges in individuals. The topic of bipolar disorder is incorporated in micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work. Through the investigation of an individual problem, group problem, or an entire society and how bipolar affects the citizens.

Local Impact/Response

Discussion with the local community will help provide the correct information about their perception of the programs and how they believe it will help community members.
