Adapt the narrative to reflect contemporary concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, Mike Nichols (dir.or
The Plague, by Albert Camus
For this paper, you will be creating and then analyzing your own literary adaptation of one of texts or films we have discussed during the semester. Your adaptation can focus any of the short stories, films, or novels we have examined thus far in class, and your primary goal with this assignment will be to adapt the narrative to reflect contemporary concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The finished assignment will be composed of two parts:

Part One:
The first part of the assignment will be your adaptation. You’ll need to begin with a one-page summary that sets out your plan for what the entire adaptation would be like. You may feel free to set your adaptation in any location or time period you desire, but make sure that your narrative clearly reflects some aspect of our experience with Coronavirus. After your summary, provide an original 4-6 page scene from your adaptation. This scene you select to adapt should one that you consider pivotal to our understanding of the work as a whole. You should maintain a clear connection to the original text, but feel free to be inventive and put your own spin on the story.

Part Two:
The second part of the assignment will be a 4-6 page analytic paper explaining and examining your adaptation within the context of current events as well as larger themes common to literature about plagues and pandemics, such as:
The breakdown of society
Divine retribution
Fear of the Other
The limits of knowledge
Anxiety regarding the body
You’ll need to compare your treatment of the scene to the original text. You’ll also need to consider two scholarly sources that discuss the scene you adapt. These should not be film reviews, but rather academic journals or scholarly books. (JStor, Project Muse, and the MLA database should help you find appropriate sources.) Your paper should focus primarily on the scene that you chose to adapt. Why did you make the choices you made for your adaptation? How do your choices compare to the original text? Is there a problem, gap, or dilemma within the original text that you are seeking to resolve? How does your adaptation resolve this issue? What do scholars have to say about the scene that you adapt? Support your analysis using quoted examples drawn from your sources. All citations should be integrated fluidly into your own prose and properly cited in the MLA format. Be specific, and remember to proofread.
